The Admirable American for this week is a female artist. Japanese American Mini Okubo graduated UC Berkeley with an MA in art. In 1938 Berkeley sent her on a Fellowship to study and create art in Europe. She escaped war-torn Europe in 1939 returning to the U.S.. After Pearl Harbor FDR imprisoned Japanese Americans including citizens, such as Okubo, born in the USA. Held in a horse stall without charges or trial, Okubo spent most of the war in a prison camp in Utah. She later worked as a commercial artist for Fortune, Time, and Newsweek, illustrated children’s books, and taught art. Check out her graphic illustrations of POW camp life in her book Citizen 13660.
