Spotlight on Activites at HCHS!
GAIA, which means Mother Earth, meets to discuss environmental issues and organize activities centering around our 3 major themes: Recycle, Reduce, Reuse. In meetings we’ve discussed ways we may encourage more recycling, reduce our use of resources (water, paper towels, energy), and reusing goods. Some issues we’ve discussed in the group are the DAPL pipeline, Keystone pipeline, GLB railroad, and the proposed asphalt plant in Rockton/Roscoe. For fun we have had picnics before we do roadside clean up and have hosted a recycled ornament party for the holidays. We also encourage members to attend activities, such as bird banding, at local forest preserves. We planted a wildflower garden two years ago with a grant from the Wild Ones of Rockford.
To further recycling at school, GAIA is going to try to develop a plan to encourage more recycling in the building, especially in the lunchroom.
GAIA meetings every other Wednesday (2/1, 2/14, 3/1, 3/14), 8:15 a.m. room 2006. We always welcome new members to our club! Please see Ms. Moore and Ms. Myers for any questions.
Some upcoming events for GAIA:
- In April we will start our annual road clean up along Roscoe Road.
- On April 4, 2017 we will send 5 students to the Northeastern Illinois Envirothon competition
- We will have Earth day activities in late April. In the past we’ve assigned certain activities to certain days of the week, such as “Meatless Monday”.
