Notes from the Choir Director Podium

What a great start to the year! The choirs have been very busy preparing for performances, auditions and other activities to get the year started! To begin just right Haley Fritts and Cross Nelson performed our National Anthem at the Purple and Gold event. When the microphone went out the entire audience in the stands joined in and sang the anthem with the duo at the top of their lungs. It was a great showing of school spirit and comradery.

Vocal jazz auditions were a success with a great turnout and two vocal jazz groups were formed for the school year. We are anxious to begin rehearsals and learn some exciting jazz music
Concert and treble choir performed at the special 9/11 tribute in the Rockton Commons. It was a beautiful morning and very moving ceremony!

Our TRI M Music Honor Society sponsored the Homecoming Variety Show and some amazing talents came forth on the stage! It was very well received and money was raised for the recent hurricane disaster.

We are excited to be starting a middle school 7th and 8th grade honors choir at the high school. This is for all 7th and 8th grade students at Shirland, RMS, SMMS and Willowbrook. No previous choir experience necessary. The goal is to bring our middle school students together in singing and learning the basics for music reading and vocal technique. We will meet in the choir room each Wednesday night from 6:30-7:30 for fun and song!

Vocal students are also preparing for the upcoming ILMEA auditions. This includes many different vocal skills to hone and rigorous repertoire to learn. Auditions are at Jefferson High School on October 7. If chosen they will participate in the district festivals in November.

Our first concert is scheduled for October 19 in the Performing Arts Center at 7:00. It will feature all of the choirs as well as our new community 7th and 8th grade honors choir. Admission is free and it is sure to be an enjoyable evening of music.

Lastly, Holiday Singers is coming back this year and will begin rehearsals during the lunch hours on Fridays starting on October 20th. What a fun group this is rehearsing and performing holiday songs at various venues throughout the holiday season! There will be sign ups during the lunch hours.

The vocal music students are very excited and enthusiastic about the opportunities and experiences to share this year!
